Reviving the Merc: A Remastered Deadpool Photoshoot to Celebrate Deadpool 3

Hey everyone,

I hope you’re as pumped for Deadpool 3 as I am! With the movie release around the corner, I decided to dive back into some of my favorite photos from a Deadpool-themed shoot I did a few years ago. I’ve remastered these shots, and I’m thrilled to share them with you.

All of the amazing people in these photos are part of the same charity as I am, Critical Care Comics. Meet Lydon Grossi as Wolverine (@dorksidefitness), Minh as Deadpool (@minjaassassin), and the fantastic Cheyenne Jazwise as Domino (@cheyennejazwiseofficial). This shoot was a blast, and the energy these three brought to the session was incredible.

We had to do the shoot in the morning due to scheduling constraints, which isn't my favorite time for photography. Morning light can be harsh and unforgiving, making everything look blown out and desaturated. Adjusting for the brightest parts of the image often leaves the shadows too dark. It’s a scenario that screams for HDR, but HDR works best for individual images that you meticulously edit, not for the 30-50 shots I usually take in a session.

To tackle the bright light, I used an ND filter to cut down on the brightness, and had Katt hold a large gold reflector to bounce some warmth back onto our subjects. The results turned out great, but I can’t help thinking they would’ve been even better if we could have shot during the golden hour.

The backdrop for this shoot was the vibrant graffiti of the arts district. You can see the incredible work of Recycled Propaganda (@recycledpropaganda) in the background. That techno-medusa piece is one of my favorites! Unfortunately, shortly after this shoot, the house where we took these photos was occupied, and no trespassing signs went up, so it’s no longer accessible for photoshoots.

A funny thing about this shoot: Cheyenne and Lydon are usually pretty serious during photoshoots. They might think they’re being silly, but not until Minh, dressed as Deadpool, steps in. There’s something about that costume—where you can barely breathe or see—that brings out the inner child in everyone. Minh’s zaniness was infectious, and it allowed all of us to embrace our most ridiculous sides.

I’ll probably share more photos from this shoot soon. In the meantime, enjoy these shots and the amazing graffiti in the background. And stay tuned for Deadpool 3—it's going to be epic!
